Link Building
When it comes to link building it is no big secret that over the years the search engine Google has increased its focus on "off-site" factors to determining where your site appears in its search engine rankings. One of the most important factors is link popularity, quality links pointing to your website with similar content will score very highly within Google's Page Rank figure.
For those that do not understand, Page Rank is a way of representing the number and quality of links pointing to your website. To use an analogy, think of every link to your site as 1 vote. The logic being that given two websites with similar content, the one with the most incoming links is the one that has been voted the better of the two by the rest of the websites within Google's index. The end result of this being that the site most linked to is most likely to rank higher in google's search engine results pages.
It is, however, a mistake to think that link building is a sheer numbers game. There is something of an art to building link popularity and the following tips have been designed to assist you in developing strong quality links that will boost your site rankings.
Build Quality Content
By far the best tip that I can offer to help you boost the number of incoming links to your website is to have quality content that people will want to link to. If your site provides real value to visitors then you are going to start gaining incoming links organically once word gets around, you do not have to pay large amounts of money to get listed in quality directories.
Always Seek Links From High Page Ranking Websites
Try downloading the Google Toolbar you can then find out the Page Rank for your own site and those of potential link partners. Page Rank is represented by a scale from 1 to 10 with each step up the scale being progressively more difficult to reach than the last. Look for sites that have Page Ranks of four and above. It is not going to be worth your time exerting a lot of energy to chase a link from a site with a Page Rank of 1 for instance.
Example A
3 links from website with a Page Rank of 1 = 3
Example B
2 links from website with a Page Rank of 4 = 8
Seek Links From Relevant Sites
While having a lot of incoming links is all well and good but Google is not going to give them as much credit if they come from sites that have no relevance to your own. If you are seeking to gain search engine positioning under the term "patio furniture" it would be much better to get a link from a home and garden site than it would be from a dating site. Never forget Google's emphasis on relevance it is vitally important to remember this.
Include Search Terms in the Links
Google will look at the text in your incoming links to gauge the relevance of your site for the purposes of search engine positioning. For this reason it is very favorable to include search terms in the links you are seeking. Using our example in the previous point if your patio furniture company is called "Doitall" it would be much more favourable for a hyperlink to your site to say Doitall Patio Furniture than just "Patio Furniture".
Always Link To The Most Relevant Page
The most common mistake people make is to always link to the homepage of their site. While this may be fine for some listings if you are seeking a link from a site that is relevant to a specific page on your site more than it is the site as a whole then ask for a link to that content. In this case chances are the deeper page is more likely to rank for the search term you are aiming for so why give all the links to a page that is less likely to rank?
Avoid Link Farms At All Costs
Don't try linking to pages that are nothing more than collections of links. Directories such as Yahoo or DMOZ are fine but pages with random collections of links hold significantly less value as the relevance is low and the chances are that Google views the page with suspicion for being nothing more than a tool to help people raise their search engine positioning.
